Course Contents
           
              This Course is designed to give very basic understanding of the Design Thinking methodology. In DE-1  A, student will select very basic and small, individual or team project irrespective of their branch. This project would be from very general topic/domain like designing something for yourself/parents/Teacher/Friends (Whole class may select single project topic or similar topic in different small groups to have healthy competition among the class). This kind of basic project in 3rd semester would help in understanding of Design Thinking process easily when much technicality is not involve. In this module, student will use whole Design Thinking process as shown in fig.1 of general guideline document to complete their projects but here the learning objective or focus would be more on Observation or Empathy process. So students need to give more time to these phases and then reach up to the rough prototype phase. The content is divided into week-wise activities as shown below to better understand the course and to give enough time to all the learning aspects and students need to follow the same but depending upon the type and nature of projects, students and guide may allocate more/less time to the activities

AEIOU Summary:-

  • Activities: What actions and behaviors are people taking to reach goals?

  • Environments: What is the overall setting in which the activities are taking place? How are people behaving in the environment?

  • Interactions: What are the basic interactions occurring for people to reach goals? What effect do people have on activities and environment?

  • Objects: What are all the details that form the environment? How do objects relate to people, activities and interactions?

  • Users: Who are the people being observed? What are their personalities like? How do they engage with other people to reach goals?



Empathy Mapping:-

Empathy Map is the canvas where designer has to observe and understand the emotional needs of the user, and on the basis of empathy of user he will think of the solution. A User Empathy Map can help tee up a discussion about the needs a user has. The discussion will be centred on what was observed, and what can be inferred about these user groups’ beliefs and emotions. An empathy mapping is a tool which helps us summarize our observations and take out unexpected ideas with no restriction & any bound. 



Ideation Canvas:-

Ideation is the creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas, where an idea is understood as a basic element of thought that can be visual, concrete, or abstract. Ideation comprises all stages of a thought cycle, from innovation, to development, to actualization. As such, it is an essential part of the design process, both in education and practice. He explained how things can be connected to get a better idea. He said that most of the times, basically innovation is nothing but the combination of existing ideas. 



Product development canvas:-

    On this canvas, the participants were to fill the purpose of their product and the experience of user when he uses their solution. Along with these things, product function, feature and components of the products need to be filled in appropriate places on the canvas. 

       Thereafter one team acted as the customer of the other team’s product and discussed the functions and features of the product for customer revalidation. Teams then redesigned their products several times until their customer-team was satisfied. These steps were repeated again and again with other teams as customers and redesign was done whenever required so that a better design emerged.




Learnings Need Matrix (LNM):-


Under the wisdom extended by the then Vice-Chancellor of GTU, Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, in the year 2014-15, we developed a format named as Learnings Need Matrix for the use by the students across all engineering branches. This tool was developed for exploring its usage in the semester IV, when a refinement is carried out in the Product Development Canvas.

The purpose of LNM is to identify the requirements of learning among the team members. While a new product/process is under development based on a unique idea (to reduce the level of difficulty faced by a user), the team members need to learn and explore a lot of new skills and documents, methods and guidelines.

The LNM is containing a quadratic layout. From centre (the concept under development), it needs to have mention of learning/exploring requirements in each quadrant representing a specific type of skill acquisition. These quadrants have a timeline associated with it that can be considered in the year of studies (II, III and IV) or phases as (short-term, mid-term and long-term). Each identified requirement of learning is connected depending upon interdependencies and paths are to be drawn. The team members can develop their own learning path to contribute to the efforts of the team for developing the concept underlying at the centre of the LNM.
